Best Of The Decade - Radio Style (17/12/09)

So we did our best to squeeze the entire decade into an hour and well, I think we made a reasonable attempt.

Alas, some artists we just couldn't fit in, heres a few that I would have definitely played if given just a little longer; The Arcade Fire (was actually meant to play Wake Up, but forgot), Klaxons, Bloc Party, Outkast, MGMT and Sebastien Tellier.

This was also our last show of 2009, I'd like to quickly thank a few people involved in the show: firstly too everyone who appeared on the show over the past few months; SanDJ(Sanjay Cheema), Michael "Semi-Pro" Donovan and Mike "Carol Service" Richards, secondly to ICRadio who make the whole show possible and thirdly, most importanly I'd like to thank everyone who tuned in throughout the year, hopefully you'll join us next year where we will still aim to bring you the tastiest offerings from the world of dance.

Ahh, its been a while, but hopefully this double Sample Saturday(Friday) will make up for it.

Firstly Jay-Z's Big Pimpin'

Intro sounds a little like Abdel Halim Hafez's Khosara.

And number 2, everyone's third favourite ed bangers, Justeeeece with New Jack.

Rips the vocals from funk classic "You Make Me Wanna Wiggle" by The Brothers Johnson.

Love 2.

Everyones favourite french duo are back with a new album "Love 2", nay not Daft Punk but Kings (with a capital K) of ambient-electronica; AIR. They have released a promo mix for the album, which sounds even lighter and happier than the Air of old, if thats possible. A new track "Sing, Sang, Sung" was debuted on their website last week.

I've been less impressed with their recent releases; Pocket Symphony and Late Night Tales didn't live up to expectations, but if this mix is any indication, we might have another moon safari on our hands. Well we can always hope.

Love 2 Promo Mix - Download [mp3]

The album is out on the 30th September 09.
And incase its shit, we've always got this:

Saturday Sample Numero 1!

I've decided that having regular features in da blog will encourage repeat custom.

On that note, every Saturday I is gonna post a sample. And to kick things off -
Below Sheila E with Glamorous Life, which was the insipiration for mysterious dutch duo; Dance Area's AA24/7.

The Hardest Working Man In Show Business.

James Brown; raised in a brothel and imprisoned for armed robbery at 16, but still went on to become one of the most influential artists of the modern era, sampled everywhere from The Stone Roses to Public Enemy.

If everyone danced like this, I would just live in clubs.

Ahh, Good Shoes are back!

I love indie band photos.

I'll be honest I'm a little bit disappointed that I've completely missed the fact that Good Shoes have returned. (I contribute this to the declining relevance of hype machine as a resource, I used to swear by it, now its popular list is simply a hotch-potch of mash ups and "insert famous name" remixes.)

Back on topic, in 2007 the band released their debut album "Think Before You Speak" full of sharp, catchy melodies and strokes-esque spiky guitars. Creating an album full of infectious indie-pop hits.
They are now back with a new single "The Way My Heart Beats" which is available for download on the bands website (which is always nice). At 2mins30 its more a songlet, rather than a full song but after a couple of listens I was reminded just how much I like this band.

Currently they are touring "heavily" and are playing London at some Oxfam shop with The Editors on the 1st October. I think I will be in attendance.

Daft Mix

I'll admitt this isn't the most up to date/current post, but after hearing this mix I felt it needed to be brought to the attention of the widest possible audience. (which begs the question; why am I posting it on this blog)

Anyway I recently came across a french website with a huge selection of Daft Punk Mixes , for those whos French isn't tres bon, I've worked out that telecharger means download or something. So have fun, my pick of the mixes so far is Thomas Bangalter Mix @ WE Club (download link), which features the absolute cream of 90s house along with some, lets say, "experimetnal" transitions, recorded all the way back in 1999, true class.

I've decided to add a feature to the blog; "Musical Facts" (the name might change to something catchier when I've got my creative hat on.)

Musical Fact #1 : Who remembers this camp classic? :

Well D.I.S.C.O. was in fact written by one Daniel Vangarde aka Daniel Banagalter, the father of young Thomas offa Daft Punk.
Daniel also made a "Japanese operatic-pop" concept album with fellow frenchman Kluger; "Le Monde Fabuleux Des Yamasuki" I got the album last week and it is quite simply amazing.

And that was musical fact #1, stay tuned for more.

Enjoying Your Twenties?

your twenties Pictures, Images and Photos

So, my first post proper and it's Your Twenties in the firing line, the London based band fronted by Gabriel Stebbing, former bassist and keyboardist of 2008 stars; Metronomy. Earlier this year Stebbing left Metronomy for good to focus on recording with Your Twenties.

The band released their first single "Caught Wheel" in November of last year, with it's catchy chorus and driving guitars it was unsurprisingly a big hit on the indie scene. Their latest offering is Billionaires, which has the added bonus of being produced by the legendary Stephen Street of Blur and Smiths fame. The result is a summery pop gem , perfect listening for these long rainy days.

No date has been set for the album release, assuming they will make one, but the sooner the better!

You can catch them at Borderline in London on September 10th.

Decleration Of Intentions

Hello and welcome to "On Dancefloors" a blog forged in the never ending depths of summer boredom. This is my attempt to contribute in some way to society, the extent of this contribution remains to be seen.

Anyway, down to business, as the title suggest this blog is primarily a musically themed one, where I hope to offer up the best new releases in the genres of indie, electro and well anything really. I may stray off these topics occasionally and I apologise in advance.

In combination with this blog, there will be a weekly radio show starting in mid september of the same name, I will be hosting it with fellow DJs; SanDJ and Humbert Humbert. More information to come.

My name is Mack.

ps: So this isn't a completely uneventful post, I'll include the inspiration for the name of the blog:

(of the album Nights Out by Metronomy, probably my favourite album of 2008)
